Ford Developing Adaptive Steering Technology to Make Vehicles Easier to Maneuver
Ford is introducing a new generation of steering technology to help improve vehicle maneuverability. According to Ford’s official press release, this new technology “will help make vehicles easier to maneuver at low speeds and in tight spaces. At higher speeds, the new technology will help make the vehicle more agile and fun to drive.”
This innovative steering technology, known as Adaptive Steering, functions by changing the ratio between the driver’s actions at the steering wheel — the number of turns — and how much the front wheels turn. Whereas traditional vehicles feature a fixed steering ratio, Ford’s new technology continually adjusts the steering ratio with the vehicle’s speed, in order to optimize steering response according to driving conditions.
According to Ford’s press release, Adaptive Steering will be available on select vehicles beginning in 2015.
